“It shouldn’t matter how slowly a child learns, as long as we are encouraging them not to stop”
Who it is for…
Stablemates supports young people aged 9–16 who are experiencing difficulties in mainstream education. For many, a change of environment provides the fresh start they need to achieve positive outcomes. Our provision offers a safe, supportive, and inspiring alternative where learners can re-engage with education and rebuild confidence.
What we offer…
- We provide outdoor, animal-based education sessions led by skilled and experienced leaders. These sessions give young people the opportunity to take part in practical, hands-on activities such as caring for animals, growing vegetables, and learning in nature.
- Sessions can be delivered 1:1 or in small groups, tailored to individual needs.
- Learning is designed to align with each young person’s mainstream educational goals.
- Curriculum-based classes support practical skill-building, teamwork, independence, and resilience.
- Students gain an understanding of how their education is a stepping stone to the next phase of life.
- Alongside our outdoor programme, we also provide access to an English and Maths tutor, ensuring that young people continue to strengthen their core academic skills each week while benefitting from the unique learning experiences Stablemates offers.
Information for Referrers
The Stablemates Education Access Programme offers both individual and group sessions, providing young people with the chance to learn practically in a farm-based environment. Our approach promotes the same goals as mainstream education, while offering the flexibility and support needed to help students reintegrate into their setting or move forward towards a positive future.
Initial Meeting
Every referral begins with an initial meeting, where the young person is welcomed to our setting and introduced to the full team — animals included. This visit allows them to explore the environment, meet the staff, and experience the variety of opportunities available.
Using a restorative approach, we spend time talking with the young person about how they feel about their current situation and what could help improve it. Above all, we ensure that they feel comfortable, valued, and excited about the possibility of working with us.
Programme Details
At Stablemates, we tailor our provision to meet the needs of each young person, their education setting, and their caregivers.
- Learning Approach: Every young person will complete a mix of written and practical tasks, aligned with the goals set by their existing education setting.
- Progression: When students demonstrate commitment, motivation, positive interactions, and achievement of their agreed targets, we work closely with their school or setting to support reintegration at a pace that suits their needs.
- Main Goal: Our primary aim is to provide a fresh environment that gives young people the best possible chance of achieving their mainstream educational goals.
